On sunday last the 19th August 2012 Coolmeen played their second group game of the Junior A Championship against Kilrush in Killimer having played out a draw with our old adversaries from Cooraclare in the first round on a score of 1-7 to 0-10.
Coolmeen accounted for kilrush on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-4 and while Coolmeen were much the better side it was still 10 minutes into the second half and a goal from Kieran Neenan which eventually saw off the challenge of the Kilrush men.
Kevin Corry was lost with a hamstring strain after 5 minutes and was replaced by the aforementioned Kieran Neenan.
Thomas Coffey opened our account for the day with a well taken score and points were added by David Neenan, Kevin Val, Eoin O Connor and Shane Mc Mahon.
Kilrush managed to get 2 softish goals during this half which kept them very much in it and coming up to half time all was square until the impressive Eoin O Connor managed to get up and flick the ball to the net to give us a small bit of daylight going in at halftime on a scoreline of 1-8 to 2-2.
Kilrush started the second half brightly and the minimum was between the sides after 5 minutes play. However Coolmeen upped the pace and began dominating matters in the middle of the field through Cathal O Connor and Michael Brooks who put in a great shift, ensuring plenty of possession for our attack. This was rewarded 15 minutes into the second half when the ever elusive Kieran Neenan managed to round his man and bury the ball in the back of the net thus ending the game as a contest. Kilrush heads dropped and they failed to score for the rest of the game. Points followed from Shane Mc Mahon, David Neenan (3), Paudie Corry, Cathal O Connor and Michael Brooks leaving a final score of 2-13 to 2-4.
Coolmeen now move on to a table topping battle with Michael Cusacks this sunday in gurteen safe in the knowledge that they have plenty to work and improve on.
